Is it compulsory to visit Canada after getting PR visa from India?

Undoubtedly, getting approval for Canadian Permanent Residence (PR) is itself achieving a milestone as the application process for PR involves several complexities like eligibility criteria, CRS score, documentation and more. Canada is the most surveyed immigration destination among Indians especially North Indian families. They grow up with only one dream in their mind that is Canada. So, it can be expected how overwhelming the moment is for them when they get the chance to immigrate to Canada to fulfill their childhood dreams.

However, surprisingly, most of the people don’t know what to do next after receiving a positive confirmation for PR.

Remember, once the authority has approved the application for PR, they would mail:

·      A Confirmation of Permanent Residence (COPR); and
·      A permanent resident visa (if an applicant is from a country like India that requires a visa).

Now, if you are residing already in Canada, then you need to contact officer at the Canadian port of entry (border crossing) and present credentials like confirmation of permanent residence (COPR), permanent resident visa (if provided), proof of funds to support you and your family in Canada. The officer will ask you a few questions to ensure that you are eligible in all terms for living in Canada.  Moreover, he will confirm your Canadian mailing address where you will receive your PR card.

If you are from India or any other country, then you have to visit Canada after getting PR visa within one year. It is worth noting that you cannot enjoy the status of Canadian permanent residence unless you visit there and get your COPR stamped.

On arrival at the airport, you will meet officers from the Canadian immigration department. They will provide you with application forms for all the necessary documents which you will need during your stay in Canada like

  •  Social Insurance Number (SIN) card:

This number enables newcomers to apply for any job or government assistance or credit in Canada.  Without it, you don’t have any identity there, and you are not eligible for any benefit of the PR visa holder.

Application forms for a driver’s license

  • A health care card:

The biggest advantage of immigrating to Canada is free health services. The Canadian government offers free Medicare to its all citizens registered under the national insurance program. However, in most of the provinces, it takes three months to newcomers in getting benefits from the public health care system. So, it is suggested to fill the application form soon after landing in Canada.

  • Permanent resident card:

This card is of the utmost importance for an immigrant in Canada. It is proof of your legal acceptance in Canada.

Next, you will meet officers from the Canada Border Services Agency (CBSA). He will ask a few questions to ensure that you are the same person who got approval to immigrate to Canada. So, you need to be ready with all your documents like proof of funds for you and your family, a valid passport, COPR and a local Canadian address where you will get your PR card after around 60 days.

Note: if you are going to change your mailing address within 180 days of getting PR status, then it is compulsory to inform the authorities about the same.

After the short interview and verification, you will get the landing confirmation document. It enables you to live in Canada with PR status; however, without having a PR card.
So if you are also interested in immigrating to Canada, then choose one of the Canadian immigration programs according to your eligibility and apply for it. As under the three-year immigration program, the Canadian government is going to welcome more than one million new immigrants as permanent residents by 2021 so, this is the right time to turn your dreams into reality.

Minimum eligibility requirements for Canada PR include:
•    An applicant must be at least 18 years of age; however, Indians of age group 25-35 years immigrate to Canada the most
•    He/she must score a minimum level of education including diplomas or certificates. However, if he/she has completed education outside Canada, then Education Credential Assessment (ECA) is mandatory. ECA is important to show that diplomas or degrees an applicant has are equivalent to the minimum requirement of the Canadian education system. In India, World Education Services (WES) issues the ECA, which costs around 20, 000 INR.
•    He/she must have an official experience certificate for at least one year in a full-time paid job field (number of years may vary according to the program)
•    He/she has a scorecard of language proficiency test like IELTS, TEF and more with a minimum required CLB level
•    He/she must have enough funds to support him/her and his/her attendants in Canada after immigration.
