Its vast stretches of beautiful landscapes, economically and technologically advancing society leaves no stone unturned in creating its magic across the world.
 Canada Family Visa

According to statistics, hundreds and thousands of immigrants come and stay in Canada every year for different purposes including study, work, tourist and more. So, the Government of Canada has initiated different immigration programs in the past few years to have more skilled and experienced internationals in its state so that they become a productive part of its economy.

Moreover, authorities also understand the importance of the support of family for immigrants so, keeping in line that they have begun to invite applications under Canada family visas for family members of immigrants like spouses, dependent children, parents, and grandparents.

So, if you also want to apply for Canada family visa, then give 2 minutes read to this article to understand the requirements, documents, and technicalities of the process, required for application of family visa.

Let’s start with the requirements. In this article, we will discuss the eligibility criteria for spouses, dependent children, parents, and grandparents separately to understand things in a better way. However, before going deep, it is worth noting here that a new immigrant to Canada can apply for his/her spouse and children whereas only a Canadian resident or permanent resident visa holder can sponsor his/her parents or grandparents there.

Check eligibility

Spouse or common-law partner:
In terms of definition, the spouse is a partner of an individual who is legally married to him and has gone through a complete process of obtaining a marriage license.  While the common-law partner of an individual either of same-sex or different sex lives with him/her for at least one year. The best part is, there is no need to make a separate application form for the spouse. However, the requirements of legal proof involved in verifying the status of relationship with an applicant are different for both of them.

On the one hand, a married spouse needs to show a marriage certificate and some photographs of the marriage ceremony only as proof. On the other hand, the process becomes little complex for a common-law partner. He/she needs to show many official documents including joint bank account statement, credit card statement which shows the activity of both partners, renting lease having the name of both partners, a salutatory declaration from both partners stating that the relationship between them is true and genuine.

Besides it, they can show their pictures of dates or trips, conversations, phone call logs and more to prove their relationship.

Dependent children:
Initially, children below the age of 19 years are eligible for moving to Canada along with a primary applicant except for children with any physical disorder, mental disability or health issue. However, after October 2017, the governing authorities of Canada made some changes in eligibility. Now, requirements for dependent children have divided into categories:

For children under the age of 22 years:
  • All children must be under the age of 22 years and have no spouse or partner to become eligible for Canada family visa
For children above the age of 22 years:
  • All of them must be depended on their parents for financial support since before the age of 22
  • And, they are unable to financially support themselves due to some mental or physical health issues.
Note: If you are a Canadian citizen, then your child will be given the citizenship of Canada, even if his/her delivery has done outside Canada.

Parents and Grandparents:
As stated above, the Government of Canada does not allow parents and grandparents of a new immigrant on the initial application except some are cases where a parent or grandparent is dealing with some hardships. So if you are interested in sponsoring your parent or grandparent to Canada, then you need to fulfill the enlisted requirements:

  • Besides it, you need to take responsibility for them and for that, you have to show some proof of income which states that you have enough money to support parents/ grandparents in Canada.
However, there are certain circumstances, when the government of Canada will not allow an individual to sponsor parents/grandparents like:

  • When an individual is in jail or penalized
  • When an individual didn’t pay back or missed the loan, bond or court-ordered family support in the past
  • When an individual is declared bankrupt
For other relatives:
You can sponsor your family relatives like brothers, sisters, nephews or nieces, granddaughters or grandsons under 18 years of age and not married or in a common-law relationship.

Besides them, any accompanying relative of the above (for example, spouse, partner, and dependent children) can be sponsored to Canada.
